Understanding carbs in your dog's food

It isn’t always easy to understand how many carbs are in your dog’s food — and we’re changing that.

(Before we dig in, learn why it isn’t clear how many carbs are in most dog foods.)

Starting in 2024, Bones & Co. 3lb Mini and 6lb Patties will make it easier for pet parents to understand the carb levels in your dog’s food — which is critical if you’re not sure how to find low-carb food for dogs. We’re rolling out new packaging with an expanded Guaranteed Analysis to include dietary starch and sugar. This means we can also clearly state on our packaging that Bones & Co. raw recipes contain less than or equal to 1% carbohydrates.

While the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) published guidance in 2023 recommending a new Pet Nutrition Facts panel, this guidance hasn’t been widely implemented at the state level. We aren’t waiting for that to happen to help pet parents understand what’s in their dog’s food.

Why does that matter? Because research shows that “carb” is a 4-letter word.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • Bones & Co. is the first widely available frozen raw brand to clearly call out carbohydrate content on packaging. You’ll see this on the front panel, the bottom of the bag, and twice on the back of the bag. (Yes, it’s THAT important.)

  • In order to comply with current state regulations (based on AAFCO guidance), our Guaranteed Analysis now breaks “Crude Fiber” into “Crude Fiber”, “Dietary Starch”, and “Sugar”. While we are required to list “Sugar” if we talk about carbohydrates, we do not (and have never) added sugar to our recipes.

  • The bag itself is now about 1 inch taller to improve the integrity of the seal.

Here’s what’s NOT changing:

  • High-quality ingredients and responsible sourcing

  • Anything about our formulation

  • Production method — we still do not use high-pressure processing (HPP) on our frozen, raw food

  • Product UPCs

New packaging will be rolling out to pet stores throughout 2024.
